Nigeria’s Senate President Ahmad Lawan has ordered the Commissioner of Police in the Plateau State to provide security for traditional rulers in the state and to ensure the safety of all the residents.
This followed an alarm raised by the senator representing Plateau North District, Istifanus Gyang, over the sustained killing of traditional rulers in the state by suspected Fulani herders.
Gyang raised the alarm under Order 43 of the Senate rules while bringing the attention of the red chamber to the killing of the acting district head of Foron, Da Bulus Chuwang Janka.
According to him, in recent times not less than 10 monarchs in the senatorial district have suffered deaths in the hands of the Fulani herders in a similar fashion. He lamented that peace was gradually eluding the area by the sustained attacks on monarchs.
“The latest is the killing of district head of Foron, who was assassinated at his palace last week with his burial due for this Friday,” Gyang said.

“Mr (Senate) President, this trend is quite disturbing because not less than 10 other traditional rulers unfortunately suffered death through the same circumstances. Sarki (head) of Barkin Ladi suffered the same circumstances. Gwom Ruku district head have been assassinated and others.
“It’s already known that the first-class monarch of Bokkos Local Government was assassinated. In view of the disturbing development, I am calling for the security to be beefed around our traditional rulers to ensure that the increasing threat to their safety is averted.
“I want to use this opportunity, Mr President, to call on the Inspector General of Police to direct the Commissioner of Police in Plateau State to direct protection of our traditional rulers.
“It’s quite unfortunate that just last week five of our youths, who were having a night out, were brutally assassinated in Jos South Local Government.
“All of these are pointers to an increasing rate of insecurity, Mr (Senate) President, I think there is need for me to say that Plateau State and in particular my constituency, which has witnessed peace before, has gradually returned to insecurity,” he said.
He insisted that the attackers are suspected Fulani herdsmen, noting that security agents should rise to the occasion of protecting lives and property of Plateau people.
