Abaribe insists on Buhari dropping of PENCOM DG designate

The Senate Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe, on Wednesday insisted on the dropping of the nominee for the Director General of the National Pension Commission, Aisha Umar.

He spoke during the plenary when the lists of nominees for confirmation was read under executive communication.

Abaribe, who seconded the motion for the confirmation of the nominees said, “However, I still maintain that the nomination for the DG be reviewed.”

The Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, however referred the nomination to the Committee on Establishment and Public Service for further legislative duties and asked it to report back within the two weeks.

Recall that Abaribe had on Tuesday at the plenary noted that Umar from the North East was not from the same zone with the immediate past DG, Mrs. Chinelo Anohu-Amazu, from the South-East whom she was to complete her tenure.

Abaribe, who raised the observation under point of order, said her nomination violated the Act that established PENCOM.

Section 20(1) and section 21(1) and (2) of the National Pension Commission Act 2014, states, “in the event of a vacancy, the President shall appoint a replacement from the geopolitical zone of the immediate past member that vacated office to complete the remaining tenure.

The plenary also referred the nominees for other appointments as read on Tuesday to relevant committees for further legislative actions.

The nomination for the confirmation of eight Justices of the Court of Appeal for appointment as Justices of Supreme Court was referred to the Senate Committee on Judiciary.

Other nominations are for appointments into National Population Commission, appointment into the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, and nomination for ambassadorial appointments.
