How prepared are we for 4th Industrial Revolution – A case study in Africa (III)

Basically, not having an enthusiastic and vision oriented government does not mean other institutions such as academic; research and development; non-profit organizations; businesses and corporations  also lack enthusiasm.

And yes, the government do have a major role in regulating policy as stated earlier. But suppose there is the drive from other institutions to step up their game and visionboard, maybe government will feel inclined to join the bandwagon by considering advise and consultancy on how they can be of better service to the public from this institutions in order not to get left behind. Besides, their will be no way of formulating and regulating policies on what they don’t understand which will only lead them to one option.

Therefore, whichever institution you might find yourself passionate about as an individual, whichever craft you have a burning desire for, you don’t have to practice for 10 years or work for 10,000 hours to be a master of your craft in the new world. That was the old and primitive world mentality.

A world which lacked machines that could multiply data in split second. A world that lacked machines that could predict future outcomes with provided data or perform tasks efficiently and swiftly. Look around you, today we live in an era where things and machines have been developed to ease and improve our standard of living. You need to have a change of mindset already or you will end up picking up crumbs right after the smart guys have had the largest share of the pie. 10 years of practice could be cut to 5 or even less.

“In the new world, it is not the big fish which eats the small fish, it’s the fast fish which eats the slow fish” – Klaus Schwab (founder, World Economic Forum).

However to achieve such height you have to possess some 21st century skills needed to thrive in the 4th industrial revolution.  Examples are foundational literacy which includes; financial literacy, scientific literacy, ICT literacy, numeracy and every other skill you know will lead you to your definite chief aim.  Determine what you would love to be a master of.  A burning desire to become and find out every skills required to be a master.  There are technologies everywhere including your ‘smart’ phones. They are at your disposal.

Have you even for one minute taught about how incredibly amazing it is texting on an item that predicts with such accuracy what you intend on typing before completing, or auto-correct any misspelled sentence. ‘Little’ things like this has you might view them to be should make you appreciate the era you found yourself and also realise the unlimited potentials of technology and artificial intelligence.

However, it will be pointless learning this skills without adopting adequate character and traits to go with it. Your competence towards your goals must include critical thinking/problem solving; creativity; collaboration( ability to leverage by building an alliance with people that possess the skills or knowledge you don’t have) and  communication. While your character qualities must include perseverence/grit; leadership/initiative; emotional intelligence; curiosity; social and cultural awareness; negotiation skills and so on. And the good news is that all this can be taught and learned, with your smart phones as well. Go get books you know will acquire you the necessary knowledge you need because not reading is like a gun to the head, not even realizing that it matters is pulling the trigger and thanks to technology, if you don’t feel inclined to read as you might feel sometimes, texts can be converted to audios (if you are reading from your smartphone). So,  what excuse could you possibly have. Also, you can get yourself a coach, register for courses and if you are OBSESSED enough about acquiring the necessary knowledge in achieving your goals, you will be willing to do  whatever it takes, then it will not be long before you realize your true potential.

On the other hand, not possessing this traits is like a car without power (fuel/electricity in regards to electric cars). No matter how fancy your car is, it will not be going anywhere anytime soon. In other words, no matter how effective your skills and abilities are in any field,  without an adequate trait and character, your goals will be limited or suffer setbacks. In a nutshell,  whatever you are passionate about doing.  Find an automated way of doing it. PERIOD.
