Average transportation fare fell in December, as fuel sold cheapest in 12 months

The average cost of transportation dropped in December, across all means except water way, according to the reports by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in its latest transport watch publication.

The decline in transport cost was on the back of the average price of premium motor spirit (Petrol), sliding 1.1 percent month on month to N145.8 in December, the lowest throughout last year, although diesel rose in same period.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the average fare paid by commuters for bus journey within the city decreased by -5.64% month-on-month and increased by 5.99% year-on-year to N181.61 in December 2018 from N192.46 in November 2018.

While the average fare paid by commuters for bus journey intercity decreased by -11.79% month-on-month and by -7.99% year-on-year to N1,579.11 in December 2018 from N1,790.14 in November 2018

For air passengers, the rate for specified routes single journey went down by -4.06% month-on-month and by -5.73% year-on-year to N31,471.62 in December 2018 from N32,804.05 in November 2018.

Average fare paid by commuters for journey by motorcycle per drop contracted by -2.79% month-on-month and rose 5.49% year-on-year to N118.35 in December 2018 from N121.76 in November 2018.

Whereas, the fare paid by passengers for water way transport increased by 0.97% month-on-month and -9.97% year-on-year to N568.58 in December 2018 from N563.11 in November 2018.
