Yellow fever 23 killed, 5 states affected

No fewer that twenty-three deaths have been recorded in the ongoing yellow fever outbreak in Northern Nigeria with 169 suspected cases reported in 41 Local Government Areas of five states.

This was confirmed in a situation report of cluster of yellow fever outbreak in Bauchi State by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The first confirmed case was reported on August 29 in a case from Kano who had visited Yankari Game Reserve, Alkaleri LGA in Bauchi.

According to the report, suspected and confirmed cases with an epidemiological link to Bauchi have been reported in Borno, Kano, Gombe and Katsina States.

A breakdown of the fatalities shows that nine deaths was recorded in Bauchi, one in Kano and thirteen in Katsina with a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 13 per cent.

The number of samples collected among the 169 suspected cases is 151 (89.3 per cent) and have all been sent to Institut Pasteur Dakar, Senegal for further testing.

A total of 15 cases have also been confirmed in the Nigerian Testing Laboratories using RT-PCR.

The centre said Nigeria is responding to the outbreak in people who are either resident in, or have visited Alkaleri Local Government Area (LGA) in Bauchi since the 1st of August 2019.

The  National Yellow Fever technical working group (TWG) activated the national Incident Management
System (IMS) to coordinate the response activities, on the 5th of September 2019.
