Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has visited the scene of the collapsed building at Ita-Faaji Street, near Adeniji Adele, on the Lagos Island area of the state, saying 25 victims have been rescued.

The building reportedly caved in around 9am today, trapping scores of pupils and other occupants.

But chairman of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said that 40 people have been rescued so far.

Ambode sympathised and appealed to people to allow the rescue mission carry out the evacuation as it was the most important action of the moment.

He affirmed that integrity test had been conducted on many of the houses around Mercy Street, Ita-Faaji, which found the buildings wanting.

He noted that many of the landlords at fault had pleaded with the state against demolition. With the collapse, he promised the state would go after the culprit.

“I beg you to please leave the scene so that evacuation can be easy. That is the most important thing right now,” the governor said.
