The Plateau State is grappling with heightened tensions and a deteriorating security situation, marked by a face-off between the Nigerian military and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
The clash emerged from the allegations made by Timothy Daluk, the Chairman of CAN in the Mangu Local Government Area, accusing the military of aiding targeted attacks against Christians and contributing to the destruction of properties in the region in a viral video.
Amidst the chaos, Daluk claimed that the military was forcing Christians to leave, allowing militia groups to burn their homes.
In response to these serious allegations, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) invited Rev Daluk, intending to substantiate the claims.
Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, emphasized the need for evidence, acknowledging the emotional impact of traumatic experiences.
The DHQ, in an official statement, denied the allegations, describing them as baseless, malicious, and lacking any reasonable foundation. They asserted the military’s commitment to professionalism and adherence to international standards.
CAN, however, stands firm in support of Daluk’s claims. Polycarp Lubo, State Chairman of CAN declared the association’s readiness to defend the allegations against the military.
Daluk, unfazed by the invitation from DHQ, insisted on maintaining his accusations and called for the military to visit Mangu and witness the evidence firsthand.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Police Force has revealed the recovery of at least ten corpses in various locations within the Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
This revelation comes in the aftermath of a fresh attack by armed men on Kwahaslalek village, resulting in the tragic deaths of over 30 victims, with additional casualties in Mangu town and its environs.
Ebong Eyibio, the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 4, had reported nine arrests connected to the violence.
“Additional police personnel have been deployed to Mangu, and the situation is described as under control. Exhibits recovered include dangerous weapons, petrol-filled kegs, and other items”, Eyibio stated.
