…As activist rolls out book on kleptomania
Mothers may be more to blame for the rot in society for over petting their children who grow into monsters to terrorise the society.
For this reason, Ekama Emilia Akpan, founder and CEO of Showers group, including Showers International Christian High School, has charged mothers to start the rescue effort right at the cradle (the home).
Akpan was guest speaker at the presentation of a new research-based book, ‘Contemporary Kleptomania’, written by an activist, Emmanuel Oturu.
Akpan, a respected education investor, brought her wealth of experience into the discussion when gave insights into how mothers create most of the weaknesses in children.
From her experience handling children from nursery till they enter into tertiary institutions or career, she said she found that most mothers cover a lot of evils for their children including shielding them from house chores.
She revealed how most mothers double back to the school to ask for favours their husbands refused to give the children. Often, he revealed, she sided with the fathers to the anger of the mothers, all to ensure that the child turned a good and strong leaf in life later. She said even the compromising mothers usually return to appreciate her for refusing the favours.

She said when school owners detect early signs and warn the mothers, the moms either scold the school owners or even remove their children, only to regret later in life. The men, she said, often took positive action, but they are always blocked by the mothers.
She advised mothers to take up the task of rescuing the society by playing the role of the first responder in issues of child delinquency.
Akpan was hailed when she revealed how she once petitioned her own school when some teachers connived with the students to cheat in Further Mathematics, leading to the cancellation, a feat she said amazed the exam authorities who have continued to respect Showers International Christian High School, regarded as home for genuine academic excellence and leading centre for Cambridge examinations in Nigeria.
Akpan stated, “If we can tackle corruption, our economy will improve, the cost of living will drop, and insecurity will reduce. Corruption is at the root of most of our problems.
“I admire the courage it took to write this book. Corruption has become so normal that people think it will never end. But the fact that God is putting it in the hearts of men to speak out means change is possible. The time has come for us to reclaim our integrity as Nigerians.
“It starts at home. Corruption is a spirit. We must teach our children values and lead them to God”.
The author, Oturu, shared the inspiration behind his book. “My inspiration came first from God and then from the things I see happening in society. It’s as if we are shifting from ethical living to a culture where even the ethical ones are being victimized”.
The chairman of the occasion, John Okah, a finance expert, set the tone for the event with a sobering reality check in his welcome address.
“Values in our clime are so eroded that nobody wants to do anything about it.”
