Senate seeks N1.1bn for establishment of civil defence academy

The Senate is seeking N1.1 billion to enable establishment of the Nigerian Civil Defence Academy to train corps to attain the highest standards of professionalism.
The academy, Senate said is imperative due to lingering national security matters and the need to set think tank on domestic security frameworks and shape community policing.
The Senate on Wednesday considered a bill to for an Act to establish Nigerian Civil Defence Academy at Pandogari in Niger state. The bill is sponsored by Senator Musa Mohammed Sani (Niger East).
The Senate explained that the proposed allocation for the establishment of the academy is an anticipated recurrent and capital expenditure in the first twelve months when the Act is commenced.
Out of the total sum, N737.6 million is proposed for personnel cost, N111.1 million is for overhead while N848.7 is allocated for recurrent and N277.7 is proposed for capital expenditure respectively.
Leading the debate, Sani noted that there is need for proper training of the corps to provide for an effective coordination between security services and other aspects of the country’s economic,  industrial and administrative life, including the country’s foreign policy.
“The setting up of the academy  is to be providing instructions to all cadre of the Civil Defence officers in the wider aspects of higher direction and strategy of maintaining internal security matters.
“The Academy will serve as a multiservice institution that will provide future decision makers with the necessary skills and background for filling senior positions in National security and associated fields, Musa stated.
Senate President, Ahmad Lawan however referred the matter to the committee on interior for further legislative action and to report back in two weeks.
