The House of Representatives on Wednesday adjourned plenary over the ongoing strike by Nigerian labour unions to enable the leadership and members to take steps towards ending the strike.
The adjournment came shortly after the consideration and adoption of a motion of “Matters of Urgent Public Importance”, moved by Benjamin Kalu, the deputy speaker of the House of House at resumed plenary.
Kalu in his lead debate, called on the leadership of the House to engage with its Senate counterpart and subsequently the leadership of the organised labour under the auspices of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) for an amicable end to the industrial action.

Several lawmakers while contributing to debate on the motion lamented the hardship caused to Nigerian masses by the ongoing strike and called for urgent steps to end the impasse.
In his ruling before the adjournment, Abass Tajudeen, the speaker of the House said, the leadership of the House would proceed on a meeting with that of the Senate. He enjoined members to make individual efforts to address the precarious situation.
Meanwhile all items listed on the Order Paper for consideration were suspended while the House was adjourned to the next legislative day, Thursday.
