Ozekhome bemoans continued detention of Adoke, bags Pan African Award for defending democracy

Mike Ozekhome
Mike Ozekhome (SAN) has bemoaned the continued detention of former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke (SAN), even after meeting his bail conditions.
Ozekhome made the observation Friday in Abuja when he was inducted into an American based human rights organization, Rectitude International Mission, for standing in defence of constitutional democracy in Nigeria.
The frontline activist was inducted into the hall of fame of the Pan African Heroes Foundation.
Speaking immediately after the induction, Ozekhome said he was worried that the federal government has continued to flout valid court orders relating to the bail of persons that are facing corruption related charges.
He said Adoke has remained in detention despite the fact that he perfected all the bail conditions that were handed to him by a court of competent jurisdiction.
Adoke is standing trial for his alleged complicity in the Malabu Oil scandal.
Ozekhome said he was delighted that his modest contributions to the defence of human rights in the country gained the attention of an international organization.
He described the award as a catalyst that would further spur him to continue to fight against maladministration and rights violations in the country.
Presenting the award, President of the body, Kerzner Rina-Yakuel, decried the mounting level of human rights abuses in the country, saying they have been monitoring activities in Nigeria for the past four years now.
Rina-Yakuel, who led a delegation to confer the award on the constitutional lawyer at his chambers in Abuja, said the award was only given to individuals that not only stood to defend the rule of law in their country, but who had also through legal activism, fought for the enthronement of good governance in the continent.
Rina-Yakuel was accompanied to Nigeria for the investiture ceremony  by the head of Governance Assessment Institute, GAI, in Ghana, Isaac Rockson.
