Mary-Maudlune Nwifuru, the wife of the Ebonyi State governor, had said that her office will launch a campaign and vaccination against Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) in the State on May 25, 2024.

Nwifuru made this known at Onueke, Ezza South Local Government Area in the State during the flag-off of her pet project, “Better Health for Rural Women and Internally Displaced Persons Foundation (BERWO)”.

Nwifuru explained that the programme would be conducted in collaboration with the State Primary Health Development Agency and would capture young girls between the ages of 9 to 14.

Nwifuru, who emphasised that the health of Ebonyi people, especially the rural dwellers, is important to her, described HPV as a deadly disease that causes cervical cancer in women and other cancer in men.

She further noted that about 130 scrotal hernia patients in the State would undergo medical surgery soon, adding that the surgery would be free and would be sponsored by her pet project in collaboration with a non-governmental organization.

She explained that profiling of the scrotal hernia patients was still ongoing in different parts of the State.

“BERWO foundation in conjunction with Ebonyi State Primary Health Development Agency is about to flag off an important campaign against Human Papilloma Virus infection (HPV).

“This virus is the main cause of cervical cancer in females. The Virus also causes cancer in males. The HPV vaccine is targeted to be given to young girls between the ages of 9 and 15 years.

“It is a deadly disease that affects the neck or the womb of the female but it is highly preventable through vaccination.

“This campaign will be flagged off in the state on the 27th of May 2024 and it will last for 5 days after which, the vaccine will be incorporated into the routine immunization and this vacation is free of charge for all eligible children.

“Also, the BERWO foundation in conjunction with notable health partners in the state will soon commence screening and treatment of early-stage cervical cancer in the State.

“The foundation has commenced the enrollment of people living with scrotal hernia for immediate and urgent surgery across the 13 local government areas of the State.

“As it stands, we have already recorded 130 patients waiting for the surgery which will commence next week”, she said..
