The strike action by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) over the fuel subsidy removal today crippled commercial activities in Jos and Bukuru metropolis.
Banks were under lock and keys and some shops around the central business area were shut down.
Offices in the state secretariat and other government establishments were not left out as the entrances were shut down denying workers from gaining access to their offices, while students of public primary and secondary schools in the state were sent back home from school.
Members of the NLC also denied staff members at the University of Jos and the Nigerian Television Authority College access to their various institutions.
Similarly, staff at the state House of Assembly were denied access to their offices also.
The Plateau NLC in a statement for mobilisation for industrial Action signed by Comrade Izang Francis made available to newsmen in Jos yesterday, states: “following the unilateral increase in the pump price of fuel and electricity tariff by the Federal Government, NEC of NLC has directed for immediate mobilisation of all affiliates to embark on an indefinite strike action from Tuesday midnight if the government does not reverse the increase”.
The statement further states, “by this notice you are to mobilise all workers to commence strike by the midnight of Tuesday if no contrary directive comes from NLC”.
The Plateau State Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) Comrade Jibril Bancir told BusinessDay, “we are on strike” as he denied the rumour making round that some banks that were rendering services to customers in the early hours of today were fined the sum of two million naira as he said, ” that is not true”.
