…as Oyo Nursing college matriculates 130 pioneer JAMB Intakes
Stakeholders in the laboratory profession have called on both the Federal and State Governments to put more funds into laboratory research to stem the capital flight.
The call which was made during the celebration of the 2024 World Laboratory Day, organised by the Independent Laboratory Owners in Nigeria in Lagos, where the scientists called attention to the need for people to be diagnosed by professionally competent medical laboratory scientists and technicians.
At the event which was held with the theme “The Future Is Lab” in Lagos, Ademilola Adebayo, the Chairman of the Occasion, said the future of public health depended on effective medical laboratory diagnosis, but said that the practitioners need more funding for them to carry out more researches on public health-related issues as there is a limit to what they could do in terms of innovation, scientific and technological breakthroughs if they were not properly funded.
While congratulating the practitioners on the annual celebration, he went further to say “frontiers of knowledge must be expanded for meaningful growth and development, adding that ” there is need to build the culture of testing now than ever before for people to live a healthy life and develop the nation.”
Meanwhile, the Oyo State College of Nursing and Midwifery has matriculated 130 pioneer students enrolled through the Joint Admission Matriculation Examination Board (JAMB) into the Nursing programme.
Welcoming the 130 matriculants, Oluwaserimi Ajetumobi, the State Commissioner for Health, commended the efforts of the Governor Seyi Makinde in enhancing the quality of Nursing education in the State.
The Commissioner, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Kehinde Ayinde, stated that the Governor Seyi Makinde-led Administration prioritises the advancement of Nursing education by introducing the award of an academic certificate of National Diploma in addition to the usual Registered Nurse and Midwife traditionally awarded by the Nursing Council.
The Commissioner congratulated the matriculants and charged them to be of good conduct and always bear in mind that they are partners with the State Government in providing good healthcare delivery.
She said, “This significant achievement was made possible through a collaborative partnership between the Nursing Council and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). The programme’s inclusion under the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board’s (JAMB) Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) indicates the administration’s commitment towards expanding access to quality Nursing education and ensuring the development of Nursing Professionals in the State”.
Earlier, Gbonjubola Owolabi, Provost of the College, welcomed the matriculants and noted that one hundred and thirty (130) students were enrolled into the Basic Nursing programme of the College.
She reiterated that plans are in top gear to invite the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) for accreditation of the commencement of the Higher National Diploma which would make graduates of the programme eligible to participate in the National Youth Service Scheme.
