The Medical Director, Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Makurdi, Peteru Inunduh in an exclusive interview with BusinessDay Correspondent BENJAMIN AGESAN in his office at the headquarters of FMC in the state capital, gave scorecards for his five (5) year-stewardship and re-emphasised his commitment to take FMC to a world standard in 2020. Excerpts:

What have been your achievements within the five years in office as the Medical Director of FMC Makurdi?

I will first of all start by welcoming you to the headquarters of Federal Medical Centre Makurdi, it is a great privilege for me to be opportune to lend my voice in a great medium like BusinessDay Newspapers which covers the entire west Africa. I will start by stating that before my inception as the medical director of FMC, things were abysmal as such, I started with training and retraining of over three hundred (300) staff of FMC for optimal performance and at the same time established a Benue Bio-medical journals to improve on research and training. I as well acquired C.T Scan and is running un-interrupted.

I purchased Endoscopical equipments and commenced full Dialysis unit at the hospital. I as well built massive structures at the Theatre unit of the hospital which makes it one of the best in the country.

Purchase and installation of 500 KV Generator to effectively improve on the power supply was also done by me. Nutrition and dental unit has been completed and a modern mortuary has been built and is operational at the FMC permanent site.

Two additional medical wards have been built at the permanent site and 90percent work completed. At the same time, we facilitated partnership with APIN which has invested over one billion naira into our laboratory;  establishment of medical outreaches at IKPA_Mbatyerev Gboko Local Government Area, Mbamtsar Mbagena_Kpav Katsina-ala Local Government Area; already it is almost  70percent work completion and fully completion of Tongu medical outreach in Konshisha Local Government Area, all by me.

Time may not permit me to state all my achievements but worth knowing also are massive rehabilitation of medical equipment and purchasing of new ones and engagement of over 50 medical consultants in the hospital. More so, I successfully carried out a total knee replacement and many other projects are  ongoing in the hospital under my leadership. Even equipment of FMC Laboratory which is rated one of the highest in the country with over two thousand (2000) specimens among many others are my stewardship.

How do you intend to reposition FMC Makurdi?

The hospital under my management will continue to train and retrain her staff as well as lobby for more funds to effectively take the hospital to a world best standard in 2020. I will also expand her scope of operations within the state.

May we know some of the challenges you are encountering?

Yes of course, no giant stride without challenge. Our biggest challenge in Federal Medical Centre Makurdi is lack of adequate funds that will enable us to set standard that will save more lives which is the primary aim. Patients are being referred here on daily basis by Benue State University Teaching Hospital Makurdi and many other hospitals for better treatment, we at times also refer them to other hospitals due to lack of some necessary equipment. If we have enough funds, we will make all equipment available to avoid referring patients to other hospitals who at times die on the way based on delay.

What then is your message to the government, staff and the general public?

I wish to first of all congratulate the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Muhamadu Buhari and the Executive Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom for their re-election into office to serve the people in their respective capacities and appreciate them for their numerous contributions to the hospital; I pray that may God Almighty guide, protect and give them the strength to serve well.

To the staff and the general public, I urge all the staff to remain steadfast to their duties and always put first their call to save lives which is the professional obligation. To the general public, they should continue to trust in FMC for excellent medical treatment.
