House leadership: PDP Committee grills Elumelu, others

The committee set up by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees to investigate the minority leadership crisis in the House of Representatives, is currently meeting with the suspended Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu and other lawmakers.

The meeting is holding in Abuja at the private residence of the chairman of the committee and a former Senate President, Iyorchia Ayu.

Also at the meeting are the six suspended lawmakers sanctioned alongside Elumelu for their alleged anti-party activities.

They were accompanied to the meeting by other PDP lawmakers numbering over 60 as a show of solidarity.

They were ferried to the venue by three coaster buses and other sport utility vehicles.

Prior to the commencement of the meeting, the legislators backslapped one another and exchange pleasantries with other committee members including former Senate Presidents, David Mark, Adolphus Wabara; one time Deputy President of the Senate, Ibrahim Mantu, as well as ex-Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Austine Opara.

But on realising that journalists were in the meeting, they withdrew to their shell and whispered to one another.

At this point, Ayu excused journalists out of the meeting.

Pleas by reporters that members’ opening remarks be taken before they embarked on closed door session, fell on deaf ears. “Elders are meeting. This is a family affair”, Ayu said.

But a member of the committee who spoke to BusinessDay expressed optimism that the issues would be resolved.

“Our committee has met before this meeting with our suspended members in the House of Representatives. We are planning reconciliation. And whatever decision reached will not factionalise the party,” the source who pleaded anonymity disclosed.
