Emmanuel Nsan a minister of health, under Buhari regime, has passed away at the age of 77.

Nsan, who was also minister of Works and Transport during the General Muhammadu Buhar led military administraton died on Thursday December 12, 2024 following a prolonged illness.

His death was officially confirmed on Monday morning during the opening of the mourning house by the head of his family, Chief Asuquo Nyong Nsan.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Comrade Archibong Bassey expressed deep sorrow at the loss, describing Nsan passing as a significant loss to his family, Akpabuyo local government area , Cross River State, and the entire nation.

She praised Nsan”s exemplary leadership and unwavering commitment to public service, particularly in the promotion of peace and security across southern Nigeria and Cross River State.

A burial arrangement announced by his family indicate that the remains of the deceased will be interred on Saturday, 8th March, 2025 after a funeral mass at the Sacred Heart Cathedral Catholic Church, Calabar.

Also speaking, Senator Florence Ita-Giwa who recounted the late minister’s illustrious career, highlighted his service to Nigeria in various key roles, including Minister of Works and Transport, Minister of Health among others.

After retiring from the military, Useni transitioned into politics, serving as Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party and later being elected as Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District in 2015 under the Peoples Democratic Party.

His first son, Chief Paul Ita Nsan commended his father for his life of selfless service, noting his profound contributions to the country, Cross River State and his community.

He emphasised that Nsan’s legacy of compassion, generosity, and dedication to the well-being of others would continue to inspire future generations.

At just 36, Dr. Nsan’s leadership abilities propelled him into national prominence when he was appointed Federal Minister of Works and Housing in 1984, and later, Federal Minister of Health from 1984 to 1985. His tenure in the health ministry was particularly transformative, as he pioneered the introduction of Primary Health Care (PHC) in Nigeria, a policy that significantly improved access to healthcare across the nation.

His dedication to public service extended to various leadership roles, including Commissioner at the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission (Abuja) and Chairman of the Calabar Capital City Development Authority (CCDA, now CUDA).
