Death toll from Lassa fever climbs to 103

Lassa fever has claimed the lives of at least 103 people in 2020 alone across 26 ststes, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed in it’s weekly situation report released on Tuesday.

According to the report the number of suspected cases increased significantly to 586 compared to that reported for the same period in 2019. There were a total of 115 confirmed cses for the reporting week, (Week 07: 10 – 16 February).

These confirmed cases were reported from 16 states to include Ondo, Edo, Ebonyi, Kano, Kogi, Kaduna, Taraba, Plateau, Bauchi, Enugu, Abia, Benue, Borno, Gombe, Sokoto and Katsina, the report noted.

In total for 2020, 26 states have recorded at least one confirmed case across 101 Local Government Areas. Of all confirmed cases, 73 percent are from Edo (35 Percent), Ondo (32 percent) and Ebonyi (6 peecent) states.

There was a total of 18 deaths in the reporting week with a case fatality rate (CFR) of 17.6 percent which according to the report is lower than the CFR for the same period in 2019 at 21.1 percent.

Two new health care workers were affected in Bauchi and Katsina states in the reporting week.
