Covid-19: CSO launches ‘offload tent initiative’ to tackle mental health

A Not- for- Profit Organisation, ‘Made Moms for God Initiative’ has launched a dedicated support service tagged, ‘the Offload Tent’ aimed at tackling the impact of Covid-19 pandemic on the mental health of Nigerians.

The Offload Tent has been conceptualized to provide a safe place for people battling emotional and mental challenges to ease their burdens and get the required counselling support.

Speaking at the formal unveiling of the service in Abuja, Founder of Made Moms for God Initiative, Imade Osuobeni said the new realities of working from home, temporary unemployment, homeschooling of children, and lack of physical contact with other family members, friends and colleagues, made it important for citizens to prioritise their mental health and physical well-being.

Osuobeni observed that the year 2020 has been a tough year for everyone and more than a few people are on an emotional rollercoaster of a sort, resulting from fear, worry and stress which are normal responses to perceived or real threats, especially in the face of uncertainties.

“It is, thus, understandable that a number of people are experiencing an ununbridled fear in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Most people have a lot of things to say, but are afraid of who to say it to, and how to say it, because of the fear of being judged, ridiculed or misunderstood.

“We all know that talking can be therapeutic, but how many people have a safe place to UNBURDEN and pour out their hearts, especially in a religious and culturally diverse society such as Nigeria?”, she queried.

Also speaking, the Programme Director of Offload Tent, Kayla Ortese stated that the upon the formal launch of the initiative, members of the public would be able to call and chat with dedicated counselors and unburden anonymously.
