Buhari inaugurates committee for autonomy of state legislature, Judiciary

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, inaugurated implementation committee on the autonomy of State Legislature and Judiciary in accordance with the 4th alteration to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of
Nigeria.

The committee is expected to foster the implementation of the autonomy to ensure proper checks and balances.

He noted that both bodies must be seen as sufficiently autonomous to enable them perform effectively.

The committee which is expected to submit its reports in three Months, is Chaired by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami, with Ita ENANG as Secretary and are among other things, to come up with a proper implementation model.

The President had in June 2018, assented to the 4th alteration to the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.

Part of the Terms of reference of the committee include, to assess and review the level of compliance by all the 36 states of the federation with Section 121(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended); to monitor, ensure and cause the implementation of financial autonomy across the judiciary and legislature of the 36 states.”

The alteration also provides for autonomy for the Legislature and Judiciary at the State levels, which we’re hitherto tied to the aprons of the state governments.
