Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Saturday said he would order the demolition of massive structures illegally built on road alignments on the Lekki corridor.
Sanwo-Olu issued the threat after undertaking a tour of the Lekki regional roads and alignments, where he blamed the excessive flooding that submerged many houses on that axis on illegal property developments worth billions of naira.
He described the haphazard development on the corridor as shameful, saying no responsible government would fold its hands and allow its environment to be distorted with illegal structures and mini developments.
“This alignment is called Lekki Regional Road. It is meant to be a relief access road to the Lekki -Epe Expressway,” he said.
Particularly unpleased with the haphazard development in Brownstone Estate, the governor said:
“Where we are now is our major place of concern. This is where people have completely bastardized the right of way,” the governor lamented.
He described it as a place where “people have built structures around this place without approval, more importantly on our right of way on the relief regional way that would ease traffic, which would ensure that people can commute from one part of the Lekki regional part to the other parts”.
“We are going to instruct the ministry of physical planning to come and ask for their building approval. The ones that do not have would be marked for demolition,” he announced.
Sanwo-Olu chided the developers of such structures like The Ridge Terrace, and other buildings on Suliman Galadima Street in Brownstone Estate in the Lekki area for displaying “high level of irresponsibility”.
