Lagos curfew may change tomorrow or day after says Sanwo-Olu

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos says the debilitating 24-hours curfew he imposed on Africa’s largest city could be relaxed tomorrow or the day after depending on the situation on the streets.

The governor speaking Thursday on Arise television also appealed for calm to stop the senseless looting and destruction which has been inflicted on government and private properties over the last two days.

He said, “I want to appeal to our people to stay off the street, to stop the bloodshed, to stop the mayhem and destruction of property. This should not define who or what we are in Lagos.”

According to him, “We are monitoring the situation on hourly basis and we can by tomorrow or the day after begin to slow down the curfew if the streets are cleared up by today or so.”

The governor who described the wanton destruction of property and the looting that has been witnessed as a big setback, said Lagos is not a place that can be locked down for long without severe consequences.

He reiterated his view about the exaggerations in the level of casualty from the Lekki military assault, saying he had been going around all private and government morgues in the city and has yet to find evidence to support claims of high casualties as promoted by some.
