Covid-19: Sanwo-Olu approves reopening of Cinemas but spas, night clubs remain shut

Cinemas

Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Saturday gave the nod to operators of cinemas to reopen for business after more than six months of closure to contain the spread of the coronavirus in the state.

They are, however, to strictly observe and comply with all necessary Covid-19 protocols including social/ physical distancing and wearing of face masks. That is after they would have registered and obtained their certification from the Lagos State Safety Commission.

The operators must ensure that two unoccupied seats separate one person from the other in their cinema hall.

“I had a meeting with stakeholders and this is what we have agreed,” said Sanwo-Olu, who briefed journalists on Saturday, on developments relating to Covid-19, in Lagos.

The governor, however, said that spas, night clubs and event centres would remain closed until further notice.

Also to remain closed are day care, kindergarten and nursery schools, while the rest – including primary and secondary schools (both public and private) resume from Monday, September 21.

However, not all the classes would start from Monday. According to Sanwo-Olu, to start from Monday would be JS3 and SS2 classes, while the state ministry of education in collaboration with stakeholders would work out an arrangement on how other classes would be staggered.

The governor also gave an approval for religious and worship centres, including churches and mosques to commence their midweek services as against restricting them to Sundays and Fridays.

Meanwhile, Sanwo-Olu has said physical infrastructure in the state high and magistrate courts are to be scaled up and refurbished while also looking at the welfare of judges.

To this end, the government is setting up a joint committee between the judiciary and executive to start work almost immediately.

“But we need to work around the logistics of how all of this will happen because there will be a bit of displacement, inconveniences, so we want to plead ahead, when both plaintiff and complainant come around the court premises.”

Sanwo-Olu disclosed this to newsmen after a tour of the high courts in Ikeja and Igbosere

According to him, this is all designed to ensure better service delivery so that people who use the court rooms will have a feel of the new and refreshing atmosphere.

“We will be seeing a rebranded, renewed physical infrastructure in the Judiciary in the week, month and years ahead.”

Sanwo-Olu said that the purpose of the inspection was to see how the executive could work with the state judiciary to begin an extensive renovation of court rooms, infrastructure around court premises, both at the high and magistrate courts.
