Adamu promises new security architecture, confirmed as IGP

Following his confirmation by Police Council, the Inspector General of Police on Thursday promised to rejig the police response to crime and criminality, while also tinkering with the Policing architecture across the country.
Adamu ruled out the need for declaration of a State of Emergency in the security sector, as according to him, “ the challenges are not beyond us”
The appointment of Adamu as the IGP was announced by the newly elected Chairman of Nigeria Governor Forum, NGF, and Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi after a meeting of the Police Council, presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The acting IGP was appointed on the 15th of January, 2019, to succeed Ibrahim Idris who retired after the mandatory retirement age of 60 years.
The Nigeria Police Council is made up of 40 members namely, the President, the state governors, the Inspector General of Police and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission.
The Chairman of the Police Council , Musiliu Smith attended the meeting at the Council Chambers of the State House alongside Governors of the 36states of the Federation.
Section. 27 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria as amended states that the “Nigeria Police Council shall comprise the following members – (a) the President who shall be the Chairman; (b) the Governor of each State of the Federation; (c) the Chairman of the Police Service Commission; and (d) the Inspector-General of Police
Section 28 of the same Constitution states the functions of the Council to include amongst others that “ the Nigeria Police Council shall include – (a) the organisation and administration of the Nigeria Police Force and all other matters relating thereto (not being matters relating to the use and operational control of the Force or the appointment, disciplinary control and dismissal of members of the Force);
(b) the general supervision of the Nigeria Police Force; and c) advising the President on the appointment of the Police
According to him, “ We have been given a tough task to make sure we provide security around the country and make the country crime free “
He announced that the Police will now review all strategies put in place to make sure that the insecurity in the country is brought down to the nearest minimum
“ We also have look at our personal to ensure that the right People are placed in the right position and this requires restrategizing to enable us deal with what is happening in the northwest and other parts of the country “
Speaking on the call for declaration of a State of Emergency the IGP revealed that it will not be necessary as the Police is equal to that tasks ahead.
“ The security agencies are capable of handling the situation so, there is no need for the creation of a State of Emergency. What we need is to re- strategize so we can face the criminals squarely”
