Buhari launches Micro Pension Plan to reach informal sector

The Federal Government in line with its goal of achieving a greater level of financial inclusion on Thursday formally launched the Micro Pension Plan (MPP) while giving assurance of its commitment to resolving all pension issues and payments, despite the resources challenge it has to contend with.

President Muhammadu Buhari, who made this known at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, said millions of Nigerians in the informal sector are completely excluded from the different pension programmes in existence. As such, the micro-pension scheme aims at promoting their inclusion and guaranteeing that hardworking citizens retire “in dignity and comfort”.

Buhari further explained that creating an enabling environment for farmers, entrepreneurs and people in other professions through the micro pension would help the government achieve the creation of a diversified and inclusive economy, one of the three core pledges of his administration.

The president, who was recently re-elected to serve a second term, however, called for the participation of traders, unions, non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders in the informal sector in helping their members embrace the micro pension plan.
