UPDATE 2: Buhari fires Babachir, Oke

“President Buhari has ordered the sack of the Secretary General of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal and replaced him with Boss Gida Mustapha who, until now, was Managing Director, Nigerian Inland Waterway Authority (NIWA).

The President also approved the suspension of the director-general of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ambassador Ayodele Oke.

The presidency later explained in a statement signed by Femi Adesina, that it relied on a report of a panel headed by the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, to arrive at its decision.

It will be recalled that the panel investigated allegations of misconduct and corruption against the suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal, and the Director General, NIA, Ambassador Ayo Oke.

“The President accepted the recommendation of the panel to terminate the appointment of Mr Lawal, and has appointed Mr Boss Mustapha as the new Secretary to the Government of the Federation. The appointment takes immediate effect.

“President Buhari also approved the recommendation to terminate the appointment of Ambassador Oke, and has further approved the setting up of a three-member panel to, among other things, look into the operational, technical and administrative structure of the Agency and make appropriate recommendations,” the statement read.

The President’s social media team also stated that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission reserves the right to prosecute the two officials.

“EFCC enjoys authority independence to prosecute, and to use discretion appropriately at all times. President does not direct or influence them,” the team twitted through the handle .
