Nigeria to roll out autogas programme Tuesday targets 1m vehicle conversions in 2021

President Muhammadu Buhari will on Tuesday roll out the much-awaited National Gas Expansion Programme (NGEP) in Abuja, which targets conversion of 1 million vehicles for Nigerians.

The event will herald the formal dispensing of autogas (CNG and LPG) products at two NNPC retail stations.

The Federal Government said the scheme is expected to offer Nigerian vehicle users an alternative to Premium Motor Spirit, which has witnessed upward movement in pricing since the government commenced its deregulation programme.

Garba Deem Mohammed, special assistant to the minister of state for petroleum resources, in a statement on Sunday informed that the rollout is the culmination of the resolve of the President Buhari-led government to deepen domestic usage of natural gas in its various forms.

“It is also in line with the government’s plan to make gas the first choice source of cheaper and cleaner energy for Nigerians in their personal and industrial endeavours,” Mohammed said.

He explained that at the event, the minister of petroleum resources would on behalf of the Federal Government hand over CNG-powered mass transport buses to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) as part of the agreement reached with Labour during negotiations and in recognition of the role organised Labour plays in the quest to bring relief to ordinary Nigerians.

The Federal Government Autogas Programme will deliver at least one million vehicle conversions by the end of 2021 and herald the clean energy transition for Nigeria and the delivery of cheap transportation fuel.
