2021: 5 ways to wellbeing

Revitalising harmony, a journey towards holistic well-being

No New Year resolution can be achieved without a stable mental and emotional wellbeing. The starting point of every accomplishment is a state of belief. Belief as the foundation of all achievement is a form of mental wellbeing. A man or woman with an unstable presentation and no peace of mind is a disaster waiting to manifest. The stable mental and emotional state is a peaceful state irrespective of one’s financial position. Life’s good when you are at peace.

There’s nothing compared with being at peace with yourself and the situation around you.

To achieve the objectives, I encourage you to identify in last week’s article, you must take ownership of your wellbeing. Mental health and wellbeing are a vital part of the human physiology that determines other aspects of a person. If there is anything in contention with you and your peace, please choose your calm no matter its significance. With inner peace, you can turnaround any misfortune, be it during or after COVID-19.

The level of contentment, freewill, willpower, and disposition are few of the factors influencing wellbeing. In 2021, you need to check your mental, financial, spiritual and emotional fitness and ensure they are in sync with your aspirations for the year.

Life will give you what you deserve, not necessarily what you desire. You must push your desire in 2021 to another level starting with maintaining a mental and emotional state that aligns with your expected outcome.

Outside the emotional and mental fitness, a stable state of wellbeing covers a spectrum of emotions, which include spiritual, relational, financial, physical and intellectual.

To ensure you are not the enemy within, the obstacle working against yourself, adopt the following ways to maintain and improve your mental health and wellbeing in 2021 and beyond.

1. Be active: idleness breeds fear and resentment. This is a significant reason for depression during a recession. A sudden loss of a job can affect mental state when you are idle. Persistent isolation in the virus era can cripple life and enthusiasm. You have to be active. Being active is to create positive movement. Health is wealth. I tell you, movement is medicine. At work, spend a minimum of fifteen minutes moving around every two hours. Be mindful of position asphyxia. Part of being active is to learn new things. Learn how to ride a bicycle or swim, play a piano, join charity walks and be part of a movement to make life better for others. One key to being active is to find what connects with you and do it in your spare time. This will give you fulfilment beyond the survival provided by the job. At an old age, a memory devoid of satisfaction is a life empty of enough meaningful and impacting activities. Be active.

2. Connect: have you imagined how useless your mobile phone is without good network connections? How will your whole body function without the parts that made the whole? Connecting with people is a form of interdependence that improves wellbeing. Take time to connect with your past. Call to an old friend and ruminates on childhood experiences. Laugh over the phone when the virus has imposed isolation. Call someone who had helped you in the distant past and thank them, reflecting on how his or her good deeds had moved you forward in life. You will feel good giving gratitude through connection. Connecting with God is an essential mental and emotional wellbeing practice. Do not leave your religion unpractised if you believe in one. How do you connect with your future? Do something that will outlive you and benefit as many people as possible. The joy I get from helping individuals and organizations to be at their best and most productive state is primordial. That is why I call myself Truly Babs. That connection made the difference outside my expertise as a management and leadership consultant. Find your connection today.

3. Give: giver will lack and get frustrated if they don’t give to themselves. Give to yourself to avert resentment and complaints of sacrificing without progressing. It feels good to help others. My mantra is to help people move forward and invest in the progressive, not the consumptive aspect of life. I would rather pay school fees than buying clothes, as I haven’t seen the beneficiary walking in nakedness. Give to the limit of your ability. Invest time, resources and commitment in others. Giving is beyond money. Advise someone. Show others the way to prosperity. Teach someone how to live a good life. Invest in others to reap the reward of personal satisfaction. I must have overemphasized the importance of building people for fulfilment in my book titled Take the lead. Check it out!

4. Learn: learning improves your state of wellbeing. If you commit your time and resources to gain knowledge and develop your wisdom base, you will feel confident. Confidence is part of wellbeing. Learn new ways of living a fulfilling life. Learn how to relate and connect well with others. Learn about other people, culture and religion without being biased. Learn with an open mind and expand your horizon. As you do this in 2021, life will appear excellent and exciting. Learning is a multi-faceted journey. It involves planning your growth, being deliberate on your learning investment and includes socializing positively.

5. Take notice: Don’t overdo things without paying attention to how you feel and your state of mind. Be mindful! Give permission to yourself to know and acknowledge what you are feeling. Don’t be the superman or woman. Be vulnerable where necessary. Express yourself. Dancing, crying, laughing and singing are expressions. Take a break when your body demands for one. Plan ahead. Give your health a priority above other things and know you can only give and help others when you are your best. There is power to be at your best. Intentionally work yourself to walk your best in life to support others and society at large by taking care of your emotional and mental state.

Above all, use breathing exercise to improve your response to life. If you take note of how you feel, breathe in and out, slow or faster than it was. You will notice a change and one of the changes is calmness. Be calm and know that whatever the situation is, it is part of the process and journey to living your best life ever.
