President Tinubu restores old national anthem with new legislation

President Bola Tinubu has signed into law a bill reinstating Nigeria’s original national anthem. The approval came on Wednesday morning, fulfilling constitutional requirements to enact the legislation.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the development while addressing lawmakers at the ongoing joint session of the National Assembly.

The bill aims to restore the anthem first adopted at Nigeria’s independence on October 1, 1960, which was replaced in 1978 by the Olusegun Obasanjo military regime.

Both chambers of the National Assembly have recently passed the bill, with the Senate approving it on Tuesday and the House of Representatives on Thursday.

In his address, Akpabio encouraged Nigerians to reacquaint themselves with the reinstated anthem. The anthem was performed upon President Tinubu’s arrival in the House chamber for the joint session.

Akpabio confirmed, “The president signed the bill into law this morning.”
