Lagos dedicated to accident-free waterways commuting

Kayode Opeifa, Lagos state commissioner for transportation, has said that the state government is committed towards ensuring zero death and zero incidences on the waterways.

Opeifa who said this while receiving the report submitted by the 11-man inter –ministerial committee on Ikorodu boat mishap, in Ikeja, said that to further ensure the safety of Lagosians who daily travel on the road, water and rail, government would soon launch the passenger insurance scheme .

He assured the committee that government would take the report submitted very serious and also implement necessary recommendation in the report that will further ensure safer movement of passenger on the waterways.

Opeifa commended the committee for a job well done and their commitment towards serving the state. He added that having carefully studied the report, its recommendations and findings, government would inform the public appropriately.

Olajide Tairu, chairman of the committee on Ikorodu boat mishap in his remarks, commended Opeifa and Oluseyi Coker, the permanent secretary, for giving the members the mandate to serve and also for their support throughout the duration of the committee.

It would be recalled that the commissioner for transportation constituted the 11-man committee on boat mishap on April 11, 2014 with a mandate to ascertain and determine immediate and remote cause of the April 2, 2014 boat mishap at Ikorodu and such other incidents including the roles of all concerned as well as make necessary recommendations to avoid a recurrence and promote safe practices.
