It was an exciting moment for Lagosians recently as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the twilight of his first tenure in office launched 876 housing units in three separate housing estates in the state.
Though these units are like a drop of water in an ocean given the state’s about three million housing units deficit, observers say they will go a long way to take many families off the state’s crowded housing market, especially in the rental market where over 80 percent of the 20 million residents are renters.
The estates so commissioned are the Ndubuisi Kanu Estate located in Gbagada and two Lagos Home Ownership Mortgage Schemes (LagosHOMS) located in Odo-Onosa Ayandelu and Agbowa.
The estates, according to Governor Sanwo-Olu, were built as part of budgetary allocations with the aim of meeting the housing demand within the modern metropolis.
The Ndubuisi Kanu Estate, Gbagada, described as one of the choice housing schemes by the present administration, has 72 home units comprising 48 two-bedroom and 24 three-bedroom apartments.

The LagosHoms Odo Onosa/Odo-Ayandelu is located along Agbowa-Sagamu Road, Agbowa in Ikosi-Ejirin Local Council Development Area. It sits on 8.22 hectares of land and comprises 660 units in 70 blocks of four house types. These include 8 blocks of one-bedroom flats (192 Units); 21 blocks of two-bedroom flats (252 Units); 26 blocks of three-bedroom flats (156 units), and 15 blocks of three-bedroom flats (60 Units).
The governor explained that the resettlement scheme in Agbowa was built to accommodate displaced people in the Odo-Onosa-Ayandelu axis of the state, the same axis as the Odo Onosa/Ode-Ayandelu housing estate. It has 144 housing units comprising 4 blocks of two-bedroom (48 Units) and 4 blocks of one-bedroom (96 Units).
All the estates boast amenities and infrastructural facilities such as roads and drainage networks, car parks, external electrification, water reticulation and sewage treatment plant among others.
Kamar Olowoshago, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Housing, disclosed that the housing estates were built using budget allocations, assuring that more estates were in the pipeline.
“In the last four years, we have delivered 19 housing schemes in various parts of the state. Besides these three being commissioned today, we also have ongoing projects at Sangotedo, Egan, Epe and Ajara that will be ready in due course,” he said.
