Ayodele Fayose, a former governor of Ekiti State and chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has insisted that Southern Nigeria must produce a successor to President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.
Fayose stated this in a series of tweets on his official handle on Wednesday, noting that the party’s constitution was in favour of such rotation.
Fayose, has been an advocates for power shift to Southern Nigeria in recent years, but the PDP last month elected former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, who is a Northerner as its candidate for the 2023 presidential election.
Fayose had contested the PDP presidential primary, but lost to Atiku.

Other notable leaders in the Southern Nigeria have in recent years strongly canvassed for the rotation of the presidency to the South after the expiration of Buhari’s eight years in office.
However, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), is fielding a Southern candidate, Bola Tinubu.
According to Fayose, “The PDP Constitution provides for a rotational Presidency. Section 3(c) provides that the Party shall pursue its aims & objectives by “adhering to the policy of the rotation & zoning of Party & Public elective offices in pursuance of the principle of equity, justice, and fairness’,” Fayose maintained.
“The current President of Nigeria is a 2-term Northern Presidency, thus implying that it MUST be a Southern Presidency in 2023 or NOTHING. Awa ‘South’ lo kan’. Nigerians should await details soon.”
