The shooting of unarmed protesters by members of the police force in Surulere has heightened tensions just hours after the President gave assurances that the disbandment of SARS would lead to reforms in the police force.

After the incident in Surulere that saw a man fighting for his life after being fatally wounded by shots said to have been fired by a police officer and another man clutching the entrails from his stomach caused by a gunshot, protesters have taken to social media to call for more protest. The police have also reportedly arrested several protesters.

In one video BusinessDay saw two women were being dragged and beating along the way by officers of the Nigerian police force.

“We’re calling on Nigerian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release OJABODU ADEMOLA, who is being detained simply for peacefully exercising his right to protest. He was reportedly arrested today by #SARS at @PoliceNG  station, Barrack, near Stadium Hotel,” tweeted SERAP a non-profit organisation.

Even the Governor of Lagos State Babajide Sanwo-Olu was at the receiving end of the protesters’ anger when he appeared after five days of the protest to plead with the crowd to vacate the Lekki Tollgate which has been blocked since 4am on Monday morning.

However, he promised to see the President on Tuesday to discuss the way forward with the protest.
