Lagos-Ibadan Expressway: Motorists face difficult weekend on more closures

Lagos-Ibadan expressway: Difficult weekend for motorists as FG diverts traffic

Difficult weekend awaits motorists on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as the contractor handling the reconstruction of the expressway, Julius Berger, has announced more closures around the Old Tollgate on the expressway which has become one of the oldest construction sites in Africa.

The contractor said that the entrance into CMD Road from the Expressway before the Secretariat bus stop would be closed for a short time to enable the reconstruction of a short stretch of approximately 150m of the road, that is from CH 1+500, end of the new road pavement before the entrance, to CH 1+650.

“This location is just after the pedestrian bridge at Secretariat bus stop. The narrowed outbound traffic lane, which is currently on the offside of the road, will be shifted to the newly constructed road pavement on the onside of the road to enable the reconstruction of the offside of the road,” the contractor explained, adding that the closure would start today, Friday, May 5,2023.

Another location marked for closure is the Extension of the Narrowed Outbound Carriageway to the Entrance to Dr. Nurudeen Olowopopo Road by Otedola Estate. This location, the contractor said, is the narrowed outbound carriageway into two lanes on the offside of the road.

It starts from the pedestrian bridge at Secretariat bus stop to Otedola Bridge and will be extended as stage 2, to the entrance into Dr. Nurudeen Olowopopo Road by Otedola Estate. The closure is to enable the reconstruction of the approaches from abutments before and after Otedola Bridge.

According to the contractor, starting from today, Friday, May 5, 2023, all traffic from the expressway enroute CMD Road could use, as alternative routes, either the Ojota Interchange to connect CMD Road through the access road after federal ministry of works (FMW) weighbridge, or the Dr. Nurudeen Olowopopo access road by Otedola Estate to connect CMD Road.

This is to enable a quick reconstruction of the remaining half side of the outbound carriageway in front of the CMD entrance by Secretariat bus stop, after which the entrance will be fully and permanently reopened to public traffic.

The contractor announced further that it would be opening a New Work Field at Berger (New Garage) on the Inbound Carriageway. This, it explained, is an approximately 200metres stretch of the carriageway from New Garage to a position before Ojodu Berger Bridge.

This location would be closed on Sunday, May 7, 2023 with the inbound traffic narrowed to two lanes on the offside of the road while the onside of the road will be closed for reconstruction activities.

“The above works are to enable us keep up with the speed of early completion of the remaining stretches of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway,” the contractor said, appealing for understanding, teamwork and cooperation from motorists and sundry road users.
