BEDC meters 22,000 customers in Edo, Delta, Ekiti, Ondo

Number of metered customer decline to 3.51 million in 2020 – NBS

Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) says it has installed over 22,000 prepaid meters under the first phase of the National Mass Metering Programme (NMMP) in its franchise states of Edo, Delta, Ekiti, and Ondo.

Tayo Adekunle, head of corporate affairs, BEDC disclosed this in a communiqué issued at the end of a town hall meeting on facilitating metering and combating electricity theft in BEDC states, organised recently by Stakeholders Democracy Network (SDN) in Benin, Edo State.

Tayo said the installation represented 25 percent of the total 90,870 meters target for the customers in the affected states. He added that the first phase of the NMMP would be concluded in the next three months.

According to him, BEDC is implementing the NNMP in its four franchise states with a view to eliminating estimated billing and it is targeted unmetered customers over a period of six months.

“BEDC is now installing meters on the pole for customers in Bands A, B, and C, as the initial focus to curtail energy theft and meter bypass, while the company has also began community metering where transformers of over 600 communities have been metered so far”, he said.
