The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) said that it paid N90.13 billion to depositors of 48 banks in liquidation in December 2012.

The managing director of NDIC, Umaru Ibrahim, made this known in Benin on Thursday at a special day organised to sensitise the public on how NDIC operates.

Ibrahim said the amount was N10 billion higher than the N80.18 billion paid to depositors in December 2011.

“The sum of N2.5 billion has also been paid to depositors of 103 closed microfinance banks (MFBs) in December 2012 as against the sum of N2.25 billion paid similar banks in 2011”, he said.

He said that the NDIC had consistently guaranteed prompt payment to all depositors of the 48 banks in-liquidation since 1994 to date.

He said the NDIC had mapped out a number of public awareness initiative to sensitise the public on the corporations activities and operations.

“Let me seize this opportunity to appeal to all depositors of banks in liquidation to come forward and claim their deposit if they have not done so.

“This can be done through the branches of our agent banks which are located in every part of the country”, he added.
