New Bridge episode looks at role of Technology in aiding taxation practices

The Bridge, one of Africa’s most watched financial literacy TV show for millennials by Businessday, in the Second episode of its third season delved into the potential of deploying technology to expand Nigeria’s tax base.

The episode features Wale Shonekan, special advisor on ICT, at the Federal Inland and Revenue Service (FIRS).

In this episode, Shonekan speaks about the role of technology in the FIRS, how it has enhanced traditional taxation practices and made it accessible to more Nigerians. He also shares on efforts being made by the FIRS to inform people about the importance of Taxation.

Nigeria’s tax culture has not been perfect; lack of education, corruption and mismanagement has hampered the sustainability of the revenue service and has affected tax compliance amongst Nigerians.

Today however, taxation has become more profitable and result oriented largely because of technology.

According to Shonekan, the FIRS has leveraged on the entertainment industry, adverts, jingles and social media all in a bid to make the message of taxation accessible to the growing millennial population in Nigeria.

The FIRS has also made efforts to eradicate the bureaucracy of taxation, now tax practices can be completed online.
