US Secretary of State calls Buhari, Atiku ahead of Saturday’s election

Mike Pompeo, the United States Secretary of State has on Friday spoken to Nigerian presidential candidates, incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Atiku Abubakar, candidate of opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), ahead of Saturday’s crunch election.

According to a tweet by Tibor Nagy, the assistant secretary for US department of State’s bureau of African affairs, Pompeo spoke to the candidates to underscore America’s support for free, fair, transparent & peaceful elections that reflect the will of the Nigerian people.

It appears the US, like every other international and local actor, agrees that the Nigerian elections will be a scrap between septuagenarians Buhari and Atiku, even though the elections field some 73 candidates.

The tweet didn’t say if Pompeo also reached out to the other 71 candidates.
