Hyacinth Alia, Governor of Benue State, on Monday, signed into law the Benue State Electricity Law, 2026.

Performing the ceremony at the Old Banquet Hall of Government House, Makurdi, the governor explained that the law is expected to have several positive impacts on the people and economy of Benue State.

He enumerated the benefits to include creating a legal framework for increased electricity generation, transmission, and distribution within the State, leading to more reliable and stable power supply for homes, businesses, schools, and hospitals.

According to him, “improved electricity will attract investors, encourage the establishment of industries and businesses, and create employment opportunities for thousands of Benue residents, particularly youths.”

He maintained that “persons doing business will spend less on generators, fuel, and alternative power sources. This will lower production costs, increase profitability, and make locally produced goods more competitive.”

Governor Alia said “the law provides mechanisms for enforcing consumer rights, ensuring fair billing practices, improved service delivery, quicker resolution of complaints, and accountability from electricity providers.”

“Communities that currently lack access to electricity can benefit from expanded power infrastructure, improving healthcare services, education, agricultural processing, security, and overall living standards across the state,” he added.

A statement by Tersoo Kula, his Chief Press Secretary, quoted the governor as saying that “the law will help deliver more reliable electricity, stimulate economic development, protect consumers, create jobs, and improve the quality of life for residents across Benue State, positioning the state for greater industrialisation and sustainable growth.”
